NPR’s ‘The Takeaway’ goes on a power trip
As part of its Power Trip series, National Public Radio's The Takeaway was in Silicon Valley last week to report on alternative-energy approaches that go way beyond solar panels, smart grids, and energy-efficient products like compact fluorescent lightbulbs.
The series covered lots of ground with its excellent reports. One episode, “Ten Unusual Technologies That May Power the Future,” looked at a diesel engine that runs on coconut oil; extracting methane gas from dog waste; generating power from trash by using electric plasma torches that consume less energy than traditional incinerators; and using genetically modified algae and bacteria to produce biofuels.—Gian Trotta
